Useful tips from Iowa State University website:
  • Be the last sentence (or two sentences) at the end of your introductory paragraph.
  • Summarize the main point of your argument.
  • State what your argument will reveal about your topic.
  • (In literature papers) State what your argument shows about the work that can not be gathered from plot summary.
  • Use key words that ties in ideas from the rest of the introduction, and which will appear throughout the rest of the paper.
Helpful information from the website of University of Southern California.
Effective titles in academic research papers have several characteristics.
  • Indicate accurately the subject and scope of the study,
  • If you use a quote as part of the title, the source of the quote is cited [usually using an asterisk and footnote],
  • Identify key variables, both dependent and independent,
  • Rarely use abbreviations unless they are commonly known,
  • Rarely uses an exclamation mark at the end of the title,
  • Use words that create a positive impression and stimulate reader interest,
  • Does not include redundant phrasing, such as, "A study of," "An analysis of" or similar constructions,
  • Use current nomenclature from the field of study,
  • May be in the form of a question or declarative statement,
  • May reveal how the paper will be organized,
  • Suggest a relationship between variables which supports the major hypothesis,
  • Is limited to 10 to 15 substantive words.
